The Face Institute is currently the only practice in NSW offering the latest technology in laser skin resurfacing. Ultra-Pulse TotalFX is a fractionated CO2 laser designed to incur minimal downtime and significant rejuvenation results.
With age, the dermis weakens, facial volume descends, and wrinkles, enlarged pores, pigmentation and textural irregularities can appear on the skin’s surface. Laser treatment can help counter multiple signs of ageing by boosting dermal integrity, triggering collagen synthesis and reducing the appearance of wrinkles, folds and pigmentation.
The TotalFX Difference:
Traditional CO2 laser has been used in skin rejuvenation for around 20 years. It involves an entire skin resurfacing, and can be associated with a lengthy downtime and potential complications, including scarring, infection and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.
What makes the TotalFX system different is that it combines CO2 laser with fractionated technology. Fractionated CO2 laser treats only a fraction of the skin, leaving gaps of untouched tissue to help reduce down time and alleviate the post-procedure risks. This optimises the balance between effective results and minimal healing time.
What happens to the skin during treatment?
During treatment with TotalFX, narrow laser beams penetrate the skin and cause columns of thermal damage that descend to the dermis. This triggers the body’s natural healing response, increasing blood flow, fuelling the treatment area with oxygen and nutrients and stimulating the production of new collagen in the dermis. As the treatment is applied, a bubbling up of these unhealthy skin cells starts the treatment and over time these cells are brushed away to begin the formation of the fresh skin layer beneath.
The TotalFX system calls upon two complementary technologies to target different skin concerns in a single treatment—it combines the DeepFX and ActiveFX laser systems. DeepFX uses narrow microbeams to tighten the dermis and improve the appearance of deep wrinkles and volume loss. ActiveFX uses larger beams to treat the skin’s upper layers and reduce fine lines, pigmentation and textural irregularities. Our patient notice a replenished look over time that cannot otherwise be achieved with over the counter skincare creams. In order to uncover a new foundation of beautiful skin, we need to dig deeper and expose the healthy cells.
How many treatments will I need?
In one treatment, TotalFX can accelerate collagen regeneration for up to six months post-treatment, leading to long-term skin rejuvenation and lasting results. The entire face is usually treated with TotalFX. However, the procedure is always tailored to each individual patient. Depending on your concerns and desires, multiple passes can be performed to target different areas for rejuvenation.
During your initial consultation with Dr Gerarchi, he will assess the current condition of your skin and recommend a series of treatments in six-month increments or as needed. Often the problems that we see on the surface are only a fraction of what’s going on underneath. At the base level, usually deep in the dermis, our cells are not receiving the essential vitamins and minerals from our daily diet. Dr Gerarchi will offer a set of skincare tips to supplement your CO2 treatments.
Treatment With TotalFX
The TotalFX procedure takes around 30 minutes and is applied in two steps – DeepFX followed by ActiveFX. A topical anaesthetic is required to minimise discomfort and ensure consistent delivery across the treatment area.
Patients typically describe feeling a “warm sensation” during the procedure, and immediately following treatment the skin will have a sunburnt-like appearance. For the best results, patients should follow a particular skincare regimen in the days after TotalFX; this will aid in healing, protect against further damage and optimise the final rejuvenation result.
While most people are suitable for treatment with TotalFX, it is important to consult with an experienced physician before going ahead with the procedure. As with any resurfacing or rejuvenating procedure, the practitioner’s skill and experience are essential in achieving the best results.
