Platelet-rich plasma therapy involves injecting a sample of the patient’s own blood to achieve a regenerative and rejuvenating response in the skin. It has a lengthy history of success in sports medicine and works to strengthen damaged tissue and improve skin health. In healthcare, procedures that involve using a patient’s own tissues or fluids has always proven the highest form of success since there is little rejection and a high affinity for them. Platelet-rich plasma is one of those procedures, that when we study the natural healing components in the body, just makes sense. Whenever our patients at The Face Institute are looking for the most naturally effective skincare regeneration treatments, we introduce them to platelet-rich plasma.
Platelet-Rich Plasma Extraction
During a platelet-rich plasma treatment, a concentration of platelets is extracted from a sample of the patient’s blood after centrifuging. We typically take one vial of blood from each patient before the treatment, the process of centrifuging will separate the white blood cells and fibrin that are responsible for healing processes, from the red blood cells in the blood. When these platelets are re-injected into the skin, they release growth factors that stimulate the production of collagen and blood flow in the dermis. These injections help to improve skin laxity, volume, reduces wrinkles and smooth textural irregularities. The process of extracting the blood centrifuging takes only a few minutes to perform.
Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) Treatment is used:
- Around the eyes to reduce fine lines and dark circles
- In the mid-face and forehead to counter wrinkles and improve skin health
- In the cheeks and lips to add volume
- On the backs of hands to reduce wrinkling and pigmentation
- On neck and décolletage area, to improve skin laxity
- On the hands
Treatment with PRP usually takes 30-minutes to an hour to apply. Swelling and some bruising may occur after your treatment, and the results are gradual, cumulative and often take six to eight weeks to optimise. These results continue to improve in the three months following treatment.
Custom Skincare Treatment with Dr Gerarchi
Typically, multiple treatments are required to achieve the best results. Dr Gerarchi and his team will work with you during your consultation for PRP treatment to devise a unique skincare plan based on the condition of your skin and desired results. These platelet-rich plasma treatments are usually performed within eight weeks of each other, to generate the PRP “boosting” effect. This effect occurs when the skin cells — which are already activated from the first treatment — are “re- boosted” by a repeat treatment, improving the final result.
While most people are suitable for PRP treatment, and it can be used as a preventative or anti- ageing method, it is important to undergo a consultation with an experienced practitioner before deciding to go ahead. These platelet-rich plasma treatments can be combined with a series of other nonsurgical treatments to enhance the overall effects. At The Face Institute, we make sure you get the most out of your skincare procedures to reveal healthy looking, fresh skin.
