For women as well as men, beauty is defined by proportion and balance of the facial features. As we age, the face naturally loses fat, which tends to slide downward. This can create hollows, or a gaunt appearance. Cheeks that are naturally flat, or a chin that has always been weak may also trouble some people. If you look in the mirror and feel that your facial features are not in harmony, or ageing is taking its toll, facial implants offer permanent results.
The chin, cheekbones and jaw provide structure for the face and for the skin and soft tissues. Implants made from porous polyethylene or silicone may be used to augment these features to restore or create balance and harmony of the face. Facial implants are placed on the bone and fixed in place to enhance beauty and balance.
Many patients choose to have facial implants placed while undergoing other surgical procedures. A chin implant, for example, is often performed at the same time as a rhinoplasty or a neck lift. Many patients also choose to receive cheek implants while undergoing a facelift for stronger, more defined cheekbones.
Implants are typically a day procedure that may be performed under local or general anesthesia, depending on the extent of the work that will be done. Patients can expect to take one to two weeks away from work. Minimal bruising and discomfort is normal, along with swelling. While most patients feel and look well enough to return to work and normal activities after a week, it will take several weeks for residual swelling to resolve completely.
Cheek implants can be an excellent option for men and women with weak or under-projected cheekbones who want a fuller appearance. Cheek augmentation is also a good option for those who have developed cheeks that look flat or saggy due to natural ageing. These implants are made in an array of shapes and sizes to complement your facial structure and bring harmony to your features. Implants are placed through an incision in your upper lip or your lower eyelid. The procedure typically takes about one to two hours to complete.
For both men and women, a beautiful face is one that is symmetrical and in proportion. A single feature that is out of balance with the rest of the face can draw attention to this area. In the case of a weak or under-projected chin, it can create an illusion that the nose is too large or there is no definition of the neck or jawline.
A chin implant can create harmony between facial features by improving the shape of the chin. This procedure is very straightforward with a short recovery time. As a minimally invasive procedure, chin augmentation requires an incision that is either made under the chin or inside of the mouth. In either case, the incision is very well hidden and allows Dr Gerarchi to make a pocket in the tissue to place the implant.
This procedure typically takes just 45 minutes. Most patients experience minimal bruising after surgery with a fast recovery.
For patients who are troubled by a weak jaw that is not well defined and distinct from the neck, or a jaw that does not have a sharp angle from the ear to the chin, a jaw implant may be a good option. These facial implants provide greater contour and balance to the entire face by making the jawline more prominent.
Also known as gonial angle implants, this procedure augments the angle of the jaw. It is often combined with chin augmentation, as many patients with small or weak jaw angles also have a weak chin.
Jaw augmentation can be performed as a day procedure and requires an incision inside of the mouth to create a pocket for the implant. Dr Gerarchi will insert the implant against the jawbone. Surgery typically takes one to two hours. Following surgery, many patients experience swelling and mild discomfort. The recovery process usually takes about one week, though swelling may take several weeks to resolve.
Hollowing of the temples is a common sign of age that begins to affect men and women beyond the age of 40. This hollowing is the result of atrophying temporal muscle and the fat pads associated with it, but it can also be the result of trauma or due to some medications that cause facial wasting. Augmenting the temporal area is a new region for facial implants, which can soften the harshness of hollowing temples. Soft temporal implants enhance the soft tissue of the side of the eyes and forehead by filling this void. While injectable fillers or fat transfer can be used to counteract this hollowing, implants offer a one-time permanent solution.
Temple implants are placed below the skin but on top of the muscle to camouflage the edge of the implant. This is a very straightforward procedure with very little swelling and a fast recovery period with very little discomfort.
