Dr. Gerarchi is a facial reconstructive surgeon who performs a wide range of procedures to improve or rebuild soft or hard tissue of the face. Genetic factors as well as disease and trauma may create the need for facial rejuvenation and reconstruction.
Facial deformity can cause a great deal of psychological and emotional trauma. The art and science of treating this issue requires both sensitivity and specialised training. Many patients require several surgeries and a true understanding of this journey will influence the patient’s long-term appearance and function.
Sometimes the specialised knowledge of more than one surgeon is required to obtain your best result. Dr Gerarchi will work with and arrange for the involvement of other surgeons and specialists to ensure your optimum care.
Dr Gerarchi specialises in nasal reconstruction. The nose forms the central and most noticeable part of the face. It’s three-dimensional form of complex grooves and ridges, along with its important breathing function, necessitates a surgeon with a special interest in nasal reconstruction surgery for the best chance of an optimal result. Dr Gerarchi performs complex nasal reconstructions and has a particular interest in reconstruction of the nasal deformity resulting from cleft lip and palate.
Surgery for Facial Trauma
Every year, tens of thousands of people in Australia suffer facial injuries. Many of these injuries result in permanent disability or deformity. Facial trauma is typically the result of a car accident, assault or sports-related accident. Most patients seek care at the hospital and then turn to a facial plastic surgeon for a better cosmetic outcome once the acute period of the trauma is over.
Along with surgery, patients suffering from trauma may benefit from management of scarring through laser treatments and skin resurfacing.
The facial droop caused by a palsy of one side of the face can be very distressing. Although a return to completely normal appearance and function cannot be achieved with surgery, many interventions can often be implemented to improve your situation. The appearance and function of your paralysed eye can usually be significantly improved, as can the appearance of you eyebrow and drooping cheek. Dr Gerarchi is also accredited to use Botulinum toxin for the treatment of facial palsy. Used judiciously, Botulinum toxin can help to even out the muscle activity on both sides of the face so that your facial asymmetry is less obvious. The use of injectable Botulinum toxin is useful for both minor and severe facial palsy patients. Dr Gerarchi bulk bills these injectable treatments, meaning that most facial palsy patients receive them for free.
Treatment for Growth Disorders
Growth disorders are typically genetic and affect both the hard and soft tissues of the face. Sometimes one side of the face is significantly smaller than the other, as in hemifacial microsomia. Other craniofacial syndromes result in an abnormally shaped face or skull, small jawbone, low set ears, or other atypical appearance. Dr Gerarchi will work with you to improve the appearance of the features you find most bothersome.
Many diseases can affect facial appearance. Parry-Romberg syndrome is one such disease, causing a progressive atrophy of the soft tissues of one side of the face. Parry-Romberg syndrome most often occurs in young females and can have a devastating effect on the psyche of affected individuals. Dr Gerarchi can assist in restoring your appearance in this and other conditions so as to help you get back to a normal life.
Head and Neck Surgery
Head and neck surgery, particularly the removal of tumours, can leave patients with cosmetic or functional defects. Large hollows or facial contour abnormalities resulting from resection of these tumours can leave people looking less than ideal. The defects and deformities left by resection of head and neck tumours can often be significantly improved by facial plastic surgery.
Skin Cancer Removal
Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most common tumour to affect the face. Also known as a “rodent ulcer,” this tumour slowly “eats” away at healthy tissue and it may grow quite large in size. Basal cell carcinoma is usually caused by sun exposure. Because it grows very slowly and rarely spreads, it responds very well to early treatment.
Dr Gerarchi can assist in excising particularly larger basal cell and other skin carcinomas, or can reconstruct the facial defect that occurs as a result of excision of these lesions by dermatologists or other surgeons.

They show the results achieved by individual patients and are no guarantee of the outcome to be expected by any particular individual considering surgery. Surgeons of good reputation do not guarantee outcomes. Unexpected events and individual healing characteristics can affect the outcome of any surgery.
